A Twist.

Soon after we brought Ruthie home, I noticed that when she was really sleepy, her eyes would kind of go googly.  In my dumb, first-time mom way, I thought that her eyes were just unfocused, you know, like a little baby's are sometimes......the problem is, it got worse.  Her eyes went googly in the middle of the day sometimes, and for long enough periods of time that we realized what was actually happening:  one of her eyes was wandering outward.  I talked to one of my childhood friends, Kari, (hi Kari!), who's an optometrist.  She told me it sounded like strabismus, and recommended we see a local pediatric opthamologist, Dr. Stager.  Meanwhile, Ruthie's eyes were definitely getting worse.  Her other eye would wander outwards sometimes, too.  It was definitely unnerving.

Long story short:  we had our dr.'s appointment yesterday.  Ruthie will have eye surgery for exotopia in the next month or so.  It's a common, low-risk surgery.  Ruthie's prognosis is excellent.

Thoughts:

1. We are SO thankful for our doctor, who is known to be excellent, and who does these surgeries all the time.

2.What if little Ruthie were still in Ethiopia, alone?  I've thought about that a lot.

3. And furthermore, what about all the little ones in Ethiopia now, who may lose their vision due to strabismus, a totally correctible eye disorder?

We are counting our blessings over here, thinking of the many children across the world who do not have the incredible access to medical treatment that we have.

Ruthie! I am sorry to hear this, but you are right, she will have a top notch surgeon and be good as gold. I thank my lucky stars for health insurance on a daily basis. Surgery on Ruthie seems like it will be hardest on you. Hugs!

I can understand how hard knowing what's expected at times, but you guys were very observant and procative by seeking the medical opinion of a friend.

Good call! Ruthie is such a cutie.

Lori's daughter has this and it is no big deal. Actually Lori does too and when she gets tired her eye will wander a little still. Eva wears glasses and that helps. Although patching a toddlers eye is not super easy!

So glad that you caught it in time to do the surgery with low-risk, and have confidence in the doc and all that. Blessings galore.

I've been thinkin of you guys a lot lately. Those times of transition, downscaling, and change-- they're blessings and tough all in one. He'll be faithful to you guys, I know, just as He was for us.

Praise God for modern medicine to take care of "simple" problems!

Hi! Kerry sent me over here because we are going to start adoption soon - probably from Gladney. Would love to hear if you recommend them, and why, if you have a moment!

My 14yo, Marg, had it too. Two surgeries later (3 years apart) and she's good to go! It looks like my 3yo, Evangeline, will bring us back to the ophthalmologic surgeon as well, so I feel ya. :( It's a big deal, but you'll be amazed at how fast she heals!
