I did not know this: Ethiopia stills uses the Julian calendar--the calendar made official by Julius Caesar around 46 BC. Of course we here in the States--and those in Western Europe--use the Gregorian calendar. Consequently, Ethiopia is seven years behind us.

This is true-- it is 1999 in Ethiopia right now! When we were there in March, they were gearing up for the Millenium New Year in September 07. The signs for it are everywhere---it will be a huge deal. We kept joking that our daughter (who was 7 mos old when we left in March) would quickly grow and be like 7 or 8 years older once we stopped off the plane and it is 2007 here in the US. :) They all got a kick out of that.
Different year, 13 months instead of 12, and just wait until you see how they do time (at 6:00am in our minds is when they say it is actually 12:00, the beginning of the day.) So, account for the time change and then the different way of reading time, and you'll feel sufficiently confused the entire time!!!!)
That's really cool! It's as though Ethiopia is a magical parallel world where not only is the food, clothing, etc. different but even time is different. Yet another reason to be excited about Ethiopia.
Crazy! I had no idea, but I think that's super cool.
